With the grave humanitarian situation in the Horn of Africa likely to worsen in the coming months, world leaders will come together on Saturday 24 September to find better ways to help millions of people suffering drought and famine now, and build long-term resilience to prevent similar future crises.

More about the event

As well as assessing how the humanitarian community has responded to the most urgent humanitarian needs in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia thus far, the Summit will focus on what still needs to be done. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will open the event, which will also provide an opportunity to discuss how to build long-term resilience in the region in order to prevent similar future crises. UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos, will chair a panel discussion on ‘Saving Lives and Building Resilience: A Flexible, Innovative and Coherent Humanitarian Response’.

Member States and key organizations currently engaged in humanitarian operations in the Horn of Africa will take part in the event, and they will also look at how to explore new partnerships and innovative ways to reach people in need despite the challenges of this complex operating environment.

The Summit will also aim to raise vital funds for needs in the region. The Horn of Africa Drought appeals still need almost USD$ 700 million to continue responding to this crisis.
