Honduras faces growing vulnerabilities, including political and social conflicts, climate change, forced displacement and migration. At least 4.9 million people – or nearly 60 per cent of the population – live in poverty, with 500,000 children stunted due to food insecurity. People live amid chronic violence and limited access to basic services.
Rising inflation, food prices, and the global ramifications of the war in Ukraine have strained the purchasing power of low-income households in Honduras. Irregular migration has surged, with 8,000 people returning every month. The country’s homicide and femicide rate is the highest in the region.
Nearly one third of the nearly 10 million people in Honduras need humanitarian assistance.
At least 3.2 million people have acute due to violence or lack of access to essential goods. More than 3.2 million people are expected to face crisis levels of food insecurity. Droughts, storms and displacement crisis will continue to drive humanitarian needs.
The UN is appealing for US$280 million to support 2.1 million of the most vulnerable people. The humanitarian community’s response aims to focus on those most affected by climate change, violence, and food insecurity.
