Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General - on the extension of the authorization of cross-border humanitarian aid into Syria

Jameela Hussein As-Shahhad lives in a tent with her seven children in the Al-Teh camp in Idleb. "We are suffering from everything here - from the cold to hunger. I work in potato harvesting from sunrise to sunset just to earn 30 Turkish liras for my children. There is no wood and we are forced to collect garbage in order to make fire. My wish for 2023 is for everyone to have the opportunity to return to their home. I do not want anything else." OCHA/Ali Haj Suleiman

The Secretary-General is disappointed that the Security Council was not able to reach agreement today on extending the authorization of United Nations cross-border relief operations in Syria.

UN cross-border assistance remains a veritable lifeline for millions of people in north-west Syria as humanitarian needs have reached an all-time high since the start of the conflict, while the impact of the devastating February earthquakes still acutely felt.

The Secretary-General calls on all Council members to redouble their efforts to support the continued delivery of cross-border assistance to millions of people in dire need in north-west Syria for the longest possible period.
