Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs visits Angola

Luanda, 01 July 2002 - The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. Kenzo Oshima, arrives in Luanda tomorrow to begin a five-day visit to Angola. The purpose of Mr. Oshima=B4s visit is to assess the current humanitarian situation and to call the attention of the international community to the humanitarian crisis in the country. During his meetings with representatives of the Angolan Government, United Nations Agencies, the diplomatic corps and NGOs, Mr. Oshima will also discuss the resettlement of displaced populations and the provision of humanitarian assistance.


Field visits to the critical regions of Bié and Moxico Provinces are also scheduled during the mission in order to have a first-hand view of the humanitarian situation and current relief activities.

Mr. Oshima is leading a United Nations inter-agency delegation composed of Ms. Julia Taft, Chief of the UNDP Bureau for Conflict Prevention and Recovery, and Mr. Holdbrook Arthur, WFP Regional Director for Central Africa.

Mr. Oshima will hold a press conference at the OCHA office on Saturday morning.
