The humanitarian situation remains worrying in Burkina Faso at the start of 2024. With over 2 million people displaced as of March 31, 2023, and over 343,000 returnees as of November 30, 2023 according to the government, humanitarian needs remain urgent in the country.

The security situation continues to drive people from their homes. More than 29,000 new displacements were reported during the month in the Est and Boucle du Mouhoun regions, including 9,000 people displaced from the communes of Doumbala and Tansila to the communes of Djibasso and Doumbala in the Boucle du Mouhoun region.

Humanitarian partners continue to respond to people's needs of internally displaced people and host communities in hard-to-reach areas via humanitarian air services. At the end of December, humanitarian air services resumed to Djibo in the Sahel region. Flights had previously been suspended in October 2023 due to insecurity. Over 790 metric tons of food assistance were delivered during the month, including 350 MT to Pensa in the Centre-Nord region and 250 MT to Djibo.
