Bangui, 23 November 2016 - Following renewed violence in Bria, Haute Kotto province on 21 November 2016, the Acting Humanitarian Coordinator in the Central African Republic (CAR), Dr. Michel Yao, strongly condemns the presence of armed men around the hospital in Bria. He reiterates his call for the civilian status of health structures and staff to be respected. He also recalled the neutrality and impartiality of humanitarian action. “This presence around the hospital hinders civilians from having access to medical care. I urge these armed men to leave immediately. I call on armed groups to facilitate access to medical facilities and displaced persons”, said the Acting Humanitarian Coordinator.

More than 10,000 people have been displaced due to clashes between the armed groups. The fighting resulted in several deaths and more than 50 injuries, including 13 serious cases. “We urge armed groups and military forces to respect strictly the civilian nature of health facilities, enabling medical staff to provide life-saving healthcare services to the population”, said Dr. Yao.

Although a medical team is present and provides medical service at the hospital, the presence of armed men hampers access for patients. As a mitigating measure, 22 injured people seeking refuge at a displacement site received treatment through a mobile clinic.
