$40.3 million for urgent humanitarian needs in West and Central Africa

The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has allocated over $19.8 million during the last three months for humanita-rian activities in Niger, Central African Republic (CAR) and Chad. Niger has been the main beneficiary, having received $14 million.

More than $20.5 million were allocated to six countries in the region during the first quarter. Since January 2010, the CERF has allocated over $40.3 million to Guinea, Mali, Niger, CAR, Chad and Senegal. The vast majority of these funds have been used to address the food crisis and respond to outbreaks such as meningitis and measles. Since its creation in 2006, the CERF, a funding mechanism used to respond quickly to humanitarian needs, has allocated more than $251 million in West and Central Africa.
