OCHA Central African Republic: Humanitarian community in Central African Republic condemns attacks on its workers

Bangui, 26 September 2016 - The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Central African Republic condemns in the strongest terms the attacks which have been involving humanitarian workers in Kaga Bandoro, prefecture of Nana Gribizi. During the month of September, 15 attacks were recorded with instances where armed men broke into the premises of international organization. Against this background, OCHA deplores the deterioration in the protection of civilians’ situation in CAR.

OCHA reminds that violence against aid workers is a serious breach of International Humanitarian Law likewise obstruction of humanitarian access. In this regard, OCHA highlights the negative impact such actions would have particularly on vulnerable populations that are still in dire need of humanitarian aid.

The above is coming amid a situation when humanitarian funding for CAR is at its lowest. To date, 2.3 million people are still in need of humanitarian assistance, with only the 532 million US dollars of the humanitarian appeal funded. With the increasing needs in the Central African Republic, a little investment in the humanitarian action is necessary to save lives and alleviate suffering.
