Since early 2011, the CERF has allocated $37 million to West and Central Africa

During the second 2011 quarter, the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has allocated over $3.7 million to Niger and $3.2 million to Chad. These funds have helped to provide rapid assistance to Niger populations affected by the Libya crisis as well as to respond to meningitis and measles outbreaks in Chad.

These new allocations have brought to $ 36.9 million the total amount of grants injected by the CERF since January 2011 in six West and Central Africa countries: Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Central Africa Republic, Niger and Mauritania. With $11.2 million, Chad who is still feeling the effects of the 2010 food and nutrition crisis, is the largest recipient, followed by Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia. Both countries received respectively $10.2 million and nearly $6 million in the first 2011 quarter for the post-electoral crisis in Côte d’Ivoire. CERF is a funding mechanism that allows a rapid and effective response to humanitarian emergencies. In 2010, CERF allocated $86.9 million to 14 countries in the region.
