Ethiopia: Statement by Carolyn McAskie, Emergency Relief Coordinator, A.I.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of the brutal attack on Monday against staff from Medecins Sans Frontieres, who were en route by vehicle from Jijiga to Degah Bur in Ethiopia. This heinous act resulted in the death of the driver of the vehicle and the injury of two staff members. It serves as a tragic reminder to the international community, on the day of the Security Council's open session on the protection of United Nations and associated personnel, of the urgent need to safeguard the lives of those whose commitment is to provide humanitarian assistance wherever needed. I trust that all measures will be taken to ensure that those responsible will quickly be brought to justice.
