UN Humanitarian Chief concludes visit to Iran

(Tehran, 26 April 2023) Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths wrapped up a visit to Tehran on Wednesday, at the invitation of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

During his time in Iran, Mr. Griffiths reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the people of Iran and the broader region.

In Tehran, Mr. Griffiths held meetings with H.E. Mr. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Deputy Minister H.E. Mr. Ali Asghar Khaji to discuss the humanitarian situation and response in Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen, among other mutual priorities.

The Under-Secretary-General also welcomed the recent announcement on the resumption of diplomatic ties between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“The spirit of rapprochement that has taken shape in the region is encouraging,” he said. “I hope this joint step by Tehran and Riyadh will help efforts to address persistent humanitarian challenges.”

While in Tehran, Mr. Griffiths also met with the Deputy Minister of Interior and head of the National Disaster Management Organization, H.E. Dr. Mohammad Hassan Nami, commending Iran’s strong support to relief efforts following the February earthquakes in Syria and Türkiye.
