UN welcomes $10 million donation from Kuwait for humanitarian aid in Iraq [EN/AR]

(Geneva 9 July 2014): The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) today welcomed the generous contribution of US$9.5 million from the State of Kuwait to UN humanitarian agencies and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) responding to the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Iraq.
An additional $500,000 from Kuwait has been allocated to the Kuwait Red Crescent Society and the International Islamic Charity Organisation.
“The State of Kuwait’s timely contribution of $10 million for humanitarian aid to Iraq is welcome and will help us scale up our efforts to provide aid to displaced families and host communities,” said Valerie Amos, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.
The latest upsurge in violence in Iraq has affected 1.5 million people. An estimated 1.2 million have been internally displaced since the beginning of the year. People are in urgent need of water, food, shelter, healthcare, sanitation and protection from violence.
