OPT: OCHA report on humanitarian activities in Jenin 07 May 2002

The activities during the last two days included:

  • Demolition of unsafe buildings is on-going. Up to date 14 out of 41 buildings have been demolished and the debris have been moved out. Prior to any demolition the UN Explosive Ordnance Device (EOD) Action Cell checks the buildings.

  • In the last couple of days (6 and 7 May) the UN EOD Action Cell (Jenin) has carried out 9 tasks and has found 45 suspicious items. Since 28 April the Cell has carried out a total of 66 tasks and has found 226 items.

  • A team consisting of the emergency reconstruction co-ordinator UNRWA, and two Habitat experts arrived in Jenin on 6 May to help to develop an overall long-term reconstruction plan for the Jenin refugee camp.

  • MSF has indicated that there might be a problem with diarrhoea in Jenin. The Ministry of Health is investigating the issue. However, there is no clear identification on source of the infection or the number of people affected.

  • The Municipality of Jenin has identified land for storing and destruction of unexploded munitions to be used by the UN EOD Action Cells.

  • Two playgrounds for children organized by ICRC have been levelled and work on the fence to guard the playground is ready to start.

  • A donor delegation with altogether 28 representatives from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Finland, UK, Japan, Canada and Austria visited the Refugee Camp on 7 May. List of representatives is attached. The delegation was briefed on the actual situation in the camp, UNWRA Jenin Simultaneous Action Plan for immediate, short-term and long-term reconstruction, coordination efforts, psychosocial work, water and sewage, mine awareness and public safety work and the work on unexploded munitions. UNWRA, UNICEF, UNDAC and UN EOD Action Cell participated in the briefing together with representatives from Governor Office. The delegation visited the health clinic, the girls' school and the most damaged area in the camp.

  • The water line at the bottom of Jenin camp has been restored, however installation of booster pumps to reach the upper part of the camp will take anotherweek to be completed.

  • Damages in the camp and Jenin city on water and sewages system are currently estimated at 1.250.000 USD by the Municipality of Jenin.
