CERF allocates $1.5 million to assist refugees in Lebanon

10 September 2013: As the political situation deteriorates in Syria, many Palestine refugees have sought shelter in Lebanon. They join a large population of refugees still displaced after the Nahr el-Bared Camp in northern Lebanon was closed in 2007. This latest influx constitutes an urgent, humanitarian crisis.

In response, the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has provided a rapid response grant of US$1,500,001 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

UNRWA will provide food and health assistance as well as ensure that some 2,000 families will be able to keep their housing. The allocation is expected to benefit 14,397 people.

CERF provides US$1 million to help Syrian refugees and Lebanese returnees in Lebanon

24 January 2013: In 2012, the Syria crisis caused more than 200,000 Syrian people to take refuge in Lebanon. The majority of the refugees fled to the northern border regions and the Bekaa Valley. These regions are among the poorest in Lebanon.

Since the Lebanese Government has not established refugee camps, the majority of the Syrian refugees live with Lebanese host communities. The high number of Syrian refugees has increased unemployment and urban poverty in these regions.

In addition to the Syrian refugees, an estimated 25,000 Lebanese people have returned from Syria to Lebanon. The Syrian refugees, the Lebanese returnees and the host communities urgently need humanitarian assistance.

In response, the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has provided a rapid response grant of $1,012,137 to six UN agencies.

The World Food Programme (WFP) received $301,205 to provide food assistance. The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) received $250,115 to implement water, sanitation and hygiene facilities. Through an allocation of $151,111, the World Health Organization (WHO) will facilitate emergency health support, particularly to Lebanese host communities.

The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) received $102,533 to provide health-care kits and pharmaceuticals. By providing emergency livelihood support, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) seeks to enable the Lebanese returnees and host communities to rehabilitate through an allocation of $105,609. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) received $101,564 to support the Lebanese returnees.

The allocations are expected to benefit 100,000 people.
