HIGHLIGHTS

  • Over 153,000 people (31,766 families) were affected by Tropical Storm Filipo and heavy rains that hit Sofala, Inhambane, Gaza, and Maputo city and province over the last weeks.

  • Humanitarian partners are supporting the government-led efforts, including sectoral needs assessments and multi-sectoral assistance to the most vulnerable and people that were affected.

  • Authorities forecasted moderate to heavy rains over the next two days, with potential impact on Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane province.

SITUATION OVERVIEW

Between 23 and 24 March, heavy rains (100mm to 300mm) fell on Maputo city and Maputo province, affecting a total of 96,239 people (20,215 families), with nine deaths and seven injured, according to the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD). The rains also damaged public and private infrastructure and impacted road access to Matola and Maputo provinces. A total of 173 houses were partially damaged, 99 totally destroyed and 20,023, flooded. At least 61 schools were affected, corresponding to 113 classrooms and 78,727 students and 807 teachers. About 13,584 ha of crops were also affected, as well as 275 km of roads damaged.

On 12 March, the Tropical Storm Filipo hit Gaza, Inhambane, Maputo and Sofala provinces, affecting 57,178 people (11,551 households) and two casualties and injuring 85. Damage to infrastructure includes 1,674 houses partially damaged and 456 totally destroyed, 287 schools impacting 59,629 students, along with 75 health centres, 126 electric poles, and 256 km of road affected. Additionally, about 30,857 ha of crops were affected.

The government has requested support in the following sectors: Agriculture, Education, Shelter/NFIs, WASH. Infrastructure reconstruction/rehabilitation needs have also been identified.

Since the beginning of the 2023/2024 rainy and cyclonic season, a total of 197,903 people (39,581 families) have been affected, with 146 deaths and 202 wounded. About 5,620 houses were partially damaged and 1,773 totally destroyed, while 31,375 were flooded. Damages to public infrastructures include 1,041 classrooms in 468 schools, affecting 111,785 students and 2,297 teachers; 155 power poles and 89 health centres were also affected. Over 909 km of road were also damaged, including seven bridges and 41 aqueducts; 30,857 ha of agricultural land were also affected, 6,133 of which were completely lost.
