CERF allocates $2 million to respond to flood-affected populations in Nicaragua

4 November: Heavy rainfall throughout Nicaragua associated with Tropical Depression E-12 caused severe flooding and landslides damaging property, vital infrastructure and agricultural crops.

The subsequent flooding required the immediate evacuating of more than 10,000 people to 102 emergency shelters, the majority of whom are children.

The United Nations estimates that more than 130,000 people in 13 of 15 departments of Nicaragua were affected. Vital infrastructure has been severely damaged throughout the country, rendering access to the flooded areas difficult. More than 200 water sources have been destroyed by the rainfall and thousands of household latrines damaged.

In response, the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has allocated more than $2 million to United Nations agencies to support life-saving humanitarian interventions to benefit 63,000 people. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), International Organization for Migration (IOM), World Food Programme (WFP), World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will provide assistance to support Government-led relief efforts. Funds will be used to address the immediate needs of the most vulnerable flood-affected persons.
