(New York, 10 May 2024) The Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, Joyce Msuya, will travel to Kuwait this week to participate in the “Ninth Conference on Effective Partnership for Better Humanitarian Aid” on Sunday, 12 May.

The event will bring together UN agencies and international, regional and local aid organizations in Kuwait to explore urgent measures to stem the spiraling humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

“After seven months of death and deprivation, the people of Gaza need more than ever to see the international community come together to expand the humanitarian response,” Ms. Msuya said. “With Sunday’s conference, Kuwait has provided a platform for action and commitment to doing all we can to support civilians in Gaza – now and in the months to come.”

Sunday’s conference is being organized by the International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO), in partnership with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and under the patronage of the Prime Minister of Kuwait.

The Assistant Secretary-General will deliver remarks during the conference’s opening ceremony*, which will also feature speeches by IICO Chairman Dr. Abdullah Matouq Al-Matouq, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General, and a representative from the Government of Kuwait.

During her official mission to Kuwait, Ms. Msuya will also meet Government officials and members of the aid community to discuss opportunities for deepening cooperation on the humanitarian emergency in Gaza and other crises around the world.

* A livestream of the conference, which begins at 9 a.m. local time in Kuwait (6:00 a.m. GMT) on Sunday, 12 May, will be available:
