CERF provides $15 million in underfunded grants to UN agencies in Pakistan

The Central Emergency Response Fund provided $14,845,730 in underfunded grants to six UN agencies and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Pakistan. The grants will target affected populations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA.

The World Food Programme (WFP) received the largest underfunded grant of $4.7 million to provide food assistance to 126,000 affected people in KP and FATA. Five projects of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) were funded by CERF in the amount of $4.4 million to support quality education, water, hygiene and sanitation services, nutrition assistance and education for affected people.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) received a grant of $2.8 million to support camp management, emergency shelter, non-food items and protection assistance for 67,000 people. IOM received $1.4 million from the Fund for a project which will provide non-food items and ensure transport and emergency communication support for affected communities. A $1.1 million grant to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will help support the livelihoods of some 170,000 people through preservation of livestock and poultry assets; improvement of quantity and quality of livestock through veterinary treatments and improved animal health practices; and diversification of diet and nutritional intake through distribution of milking tools and milk preservation containers.

Emergency health care services for will be supported through CERF funding of a World Health Organization (WHO) project in the amount of $357,000 to benefit 67,000 affected people. Two grants were provided to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in the amount of $190,000 to ensure free reproductive health services, focusing on emergency obstetric and newborn health care services for women and children in affected areas benefiting more than 50,000 people. A gender-based violence prevention project will benefit some 15,000 people.
