Statement attributable to Carolyn McAskie, ERC A.I. on Sudan

Note to the Spokesman
The Emergency Relief Coordinator a.i. is deeply saddened and seriously concerned over reports of an incident that took place last week in which two humanitarian aid workers were killed and two abducted in Unity State, Sudan.

The four Sudanese employees of CARE International were proceeding from Bentiu to Mayom area to open a health center when their vehicle was ambushed by unknown assailants, approximately 30 kms. from Mayom.

The ERC a.i. expresses deepest sympathy to the families of those concerned and to CARE International, and calls for all parties involved to maintain respect for international humanitarian law and principles.
