(New York: 15 June 2011): I am extremely alarmed by the violence that has engulfed South Kordofan in Sudan since 5 June and the increasing reports of civilians being targeted. Humanitarian organisations are delivering aid where they can, but their ability to help most of those in need is seriously compromised by insecurity and lack of access.
Immediate, unconditional and safe freedom of movement for humanitarian organisations is needed in order to protect and assist those in need of aid. I call on all parties to the conflict to refrain from targeting civilians and using indiscriminate tactics, and to respect and protect civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law.
