Summary of statement of Catherine Bragg to the Security Council on Sudan

I just briefed the Security Council on the humanitarian situation in Southern Kordofan. In the State capital city of Kadugli, it is estimated that more than 70 percent of the population have been displaced and many of the 1.4 million residents of the 11 localities where fighting has been reported have been affected. Estimates to date indicate approximately 60,000 people have been displaced. Humanitarian agencies have been able to distribute food, NFIs and do medical screenings to some of the displaced population. However, shortage of water and shelter are a concern to us.

Humanitarian partners in the north are strengthening information sharing forums and developing contingency plans for South Kordofan and Blue Nile States. These measures will allow humanitarians to be prepared should the situation further deteriorate. I urged the Security Council to continue to support the resumption of negotiation between the parties. All forces must refrain from targeting civilians and ensure the safe and unhindered passage of civilians, and humanitarian personnel and assets. Further, I asked the Council to be actively engaged in finding concrete solutions for the protection of civilians and also for an enabling humanitarian operating environment in order to avert an even larger humanitarian catastrophe.

Humanitarians must be allowed to reach people who need our assistance.
