United Nations humanitarian chief condemns killing of aid worker in southern Sudan

(New York, 25 April 2011): United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Ms. Valerie Amos, expressed her deep concern today about recent attacks on humanitarian workers in southern Sudan. On 23 April, a humanitarian staff member from the World Food Programme was killed during an attack by armed assailants in Jonglei state. “My thoughts and deepest condolences go to his family,” said Ms. Amos.

Ms. Amos also expressed grave concern for the safety of two staff from the International Organization for Migration and called for their safe return as they remain missing after being forced to drive into an area of active conflict on 19 April. “These incidents demonstrate complete disregard for the safety and security of humanitarian personnel and I condemn them in the strongest possible terms,” she said.

Ms. Amos urged the Government of Southern Sudan and other armed groups to take all measures possible to protect the safety and security of humanitarian aid workers and to ensure that humanitarian organisations are able to reach people in need of emergency assistance.
