U.N. Humanitarian Chief Martin Griffiths to Visit Jordan, Syria

New York, 21 March 2023

The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, is traveling today to Jordan and Syria.

In Amman, Mr. Griffiths will meet with Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to discuss the current humanitarian and refugee situation in the region.

Mr. Griffiths will then travel to Damascus where he is expected to hold talks with senior Syrian Government officials. Mr. Griffiths will emphasize the need for continued expanded humanitarian access and scale up aid operations to address the growing needs throughout Syria, where the impact of the 6 February earthquake has exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation.

While in the Syrian capital, Mr. Griffiths will also meet with representatives of national and international NGOs and other humanitarian partners. In those meetings, Mr. Griffiths hopes to hear the challenges that humanitarian workers face and what can be done to bolster existing aid operations.

This is Mr. Griffiths’ second trip to the region following the 6 February earthquakes. He visited Ankara, Gaziantep, Aleppo and Damascus last month.
