(New York, 29 September 2014) Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos, and His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Al Meraikhi of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, met today to discuss the humanitarian situation in Syria and neighbouring countries.

“Qatar’s announcement today of US$20 million for the Humanitarian Pooled Fund will enable us and our partners to help people in the hard-to-reach areas inside Syria,” noted USG Amos. “As well as supporting under-funded operations in shelter, health, and food, these funds will help humanitarian agencies sustain vital cross-border operations.”

Some eleven million people urgently need aid in Syria, and more than 4.7 million of them are in areas which aid agencies can only reach by bringing relief supplies across borders. Since July, 14 additional cross-border aid convoys authorized by the Security Council have delivered assistance for more than 500,000 people.
