Media Advisory: National and international organizations unite to mark the International Mine Awareness Day in Ukraine [EN/UK]

KYIV – The Government of Ukraine and representatives of local and international organizations, the United Nations agencies, funds and programmes will organize a joint event to commemorate the International Mine Awareness Day in Ukraine on 4 April 2018.

During the event, the organizers will demonstrate mine-clearance activities, demining vehicles and equipment, and will provide a demonstration of landmines and Explosive Remnants of War trainings. In addition, photos and videos showing mine action in Ukraine will be displayed at the event to raise awareness on the deadly consequences of mines, advocate for mine free Ukraine, and showcase the tireless efforts of the Government and international organizations on mine-clearance, mine-risk education and other awareness raising activities in attempt to reverse the negative impact of mine contamination in eastern Ukraine.

Background information: April 4 has been nominated by the General Assembly as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. The General Assembly has called for continued efforts by States, with the assistance of the United Nations and relevant organizations, to foster the establishment and development of national mine-action capacities in countries where mines and explosive remnants of war constitute a serious threat to the safety, health and lives of the civilian population, or an impediment to social and economic development at the national and local levels.
