Global Food Security Update (July 2011)

KEY MESSAGES

• Overall, international food prices remained relatively stable in May, decreasing only slightly from their levels in April. World prices are likely to remain high and volatile.

• On 23 June G20 agriculture ministers agreed an Agriculture Ministerial Declaration and Action Plan on Food Price Volatility that will be submitted to G20 leaders at their Summit in November 2011.

• Food insecurity has reached an extremely alarming level in some areas of the Horn of Africa due to two consecutive seasons of below-average rainfall, combined with rising prices. The situation is the most severe food security emergency in the world today with at least 8.8 million people in Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia affected by food insecurity.
