Statement by Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos on the situation in Yemen

(New York: 27 May 2011): I am deeply alarmed by the escalating violence in Yemen, where recent heavy fighting in the capital Sanaa killed and injured dozens of people.

There are reports of many families leaving the city, and I am concerned that continued confrontations could force large numbers of people to flee their homes, with serious humanitarian consequences. Many Yemenis already face shortages of food, fuel and other basic necessities.

The UN is monitoring the situation, and stands ready to offer assistance if needed.

I call on all parties to respect and protect civilians, and to spare them from the effect of further hostilities.
