SITUATION OVERVIEW

Heavy rainfall on the evening of 27 August led to dangerous flash floods in Milhan District of Al Mahwit Governorate. The rainfall affected at least nine subdistricts, causing landslides and falling boulders.

Houses have been damaged or destroyed, and agricultural lands, health facilities, and some water storage tanks have reportedly sustained damage. The main roads leading to at least two affected sub-districts are blocked.

HUMANITARIAN IMPACT AND NEEDS

Initial information suggests scores of casualties and missing people; local sources estimate this figure to be around 40 people missing or dead. However, these figures are subject to change as search and rescue operations are ongoing, and most partners still do not have access to the affected locations.

On 29 August, Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) teams managed to reach some of the affected locations in Milhan District to conduct a Rapid Needs Assessment. These assessments are ongoing. Initial findings in the assessed locations indicate that 15 houses were completely destroyed and another 50 were severely damaged, along with damage to civilian infrastructure, including roads and water supply systems.

Additionally, local sources reported that at least 215 families were displaced within the same district and are currently hosted in two schools. The number will likely increase as many families cannot move to other locations due to damaged or blocked roads.

Food, shelter and protection have been identified as top priorities. There is also a need for water disinfection for contaminated wells, provision of water treatment and hygiene materials at household level.
